Weyer scores 16 in final game for Thoroughbreds

Ben Weyer helped the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds to the state semifinals for the first time since 1953.

But the Thoroughbreds (30-5 overall) ran into the eventual state champion Lexington Dunbar Bulldogs (33-6) and lost 55-47. The Fort Thomas resident had 16 points, nine rebounds and blocked two shots.

During his four years at NewCath, the Thoroughbreds achieved a lot. They won four district championships and made four appearances in the All "A" State Tournament. They won it three years in a row before falling to Cordia in the semifinals this year.
