Ben Weyer helped the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds basketball team to their first state tournament win since 1975 with a convincing 48-33 win over 7th Region champion Louisville Trinity on Wednesday.

Weyer, a Fort Thomas native, had a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds to led NewCath (29-4). He also had four assists, two steals and five blocked shots.

NewCath takes on Murray (30-5) at Noon on Friday in the state quarterfinals back at Rupp Arena. The Thoroughbreds have only been past the quarterfinals once in school history back in 1953 when Weyer's grandfather Jim played there.
