Creech helps Jenkins to 14th Region title game

Whitney Creech and the Jenkins Lady Cavaliers are playing for a 14th Region title for the first time since 1997 after defeating the host Powell County Lady Pirates, 67-58 on Friday in the region semifinals.

Creech scored 48 points to help the Jenkins cause. She extended her state record for the most career points in Kentucky high school basketball history for boys and girls to 5,476. Creech has beaten Highlands Head Coach Jaime Walz-Richey's record of 4,948 points by 528 points.

Creech also topped the 1,600-point plateau on the season at 1,609 for an average of 50.3 per game. The state record for the most points in a season for girls is 1,885 set by McDowell High's Geri Grigsby back in 1997. Richey's career-high for most points in a season was 1,135 her junior year in 1995. That mark is still fourth in Kentucky girls basketball history.

Jenkins (18-14) takes on Leslie County (20-8) for the region championship at 7 p.m. back at Powell County on Saturday. Jenkins beat Leslie County, 70-61 in the All "A" 14th Region Tournament on Jan. 13. Jenkins last won consecutive region crowns in 1975 and 1976.
