The Newport
Central Catholic Thoroughbreds softball team handled the in-town rival Newport
Ladycats, 7-2 in the 36th District semifinals on Tuesday.
Bellevue 4, Newport Central Catholic 1:
NewCath (18-9)
pulled away in the bottom of the fourth scoring twice. The Thoroughbreds added
one in the fifth and two more in the sixth. The game took place at Winkler Park
in Fort Thomas.
Freshman
Haley Meyers pitched another gem for NewCath. She struck out 12. Meyers also
went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.
Michaela
Ware led NewCath at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double. Loren Zimmerman and
Taylor Burkart had two hits and an RBI each for the Thoroughbreds.
NewCath
faces Highlands or Dayton in the title game on Thursday. Game time is 6 p.m.
Baseball:
36th District Semifinals:Bellevue 4, Newport Central Catholic 1:
It marked
an end to a tough season for the Thoroughbreds (11-23).
NewCath
struggled this season and will miss the region tournament for the first time
since 2010. This comes after region titles in 2011 and 2012 and an All “A”
State championship last year.
Bellevue
scored three runs in the third inning and never looked back. The Thoroughbreds
scored once in the fifth but the Tigers earned it back in the bottom of the
frame.
Jake
Pangallo led NewCath going 2-for-4 with a double. Mitch Pangallo added a
double.
Bellevue
outhit NewCath, 8-6. Brian Dill led the Tigers going 2-for-2 with a double and
four runs batted in. Teammate Dylan Huff finished 2-for-3 with a double, triple
and two runs scored.
Grant
Moeves pitched six innings in the losing effort for the Thoroughbreds. He
struck out three and walked four. Counterpart Briley Seiter also pitched a
complete game striking out one and walking two.
NewCath
graduates five seniors from the team. They are Mitch Pangallo, Jake Pangallo,
Tommy Donnelly, Jake Yeager and Kole Zenni.
