The
Highlands Bluebirds baseball team moved another step closer to the top seed in
the 36th District Tournament on Friday.
Highlands
(14-10) downed the host Newport Wildcats, 13-1 in six innings. The Bluebirds
moved to 2-0 in district action with contests against Dayton and Bellevue
remaining.
Highlands
outhit Newport, 13-4. D.J. Mills paced the Bluebirds going 3-for-4 with a
double, four runs batted in and two runs scored. Jake Whitford, Kenny Ball,
Grayson Heck and Brandon Hergott followed with two hits each. Lou Bunning had
two runs batted in with Alex Veneman, Todd Ramey, Heck and Josh Watson scoring
two runs each.
The Bluebirds
recorded seven stolen bases. Heck led the way with two.
Heck also
picked up the pitching win. He threw four innings and struck out five.
Highlands
returns to action Saturday with two home games. The Bluebirds face the
Covington Catholic Colonels at 10 a.m. before taking on Cincinnati Moeller at 3:30
p.m.

The
Thoroughbreds (8-18) fell for the 11th time in 12 games Friday.
NewCath
takes on Conner on Saturday at Morscher Field. Game time is Noon.
