The Newport
Central Catholic Thoroughbreds girls basketball team opened the All “A” State
Tournament with a 58-32 thrashing of the Pineville Lady Lions on Wednesday.
NewCath
(16-4) used good shooting and solid defense to jump out to a 37-15 halftime
advantage. The Thoroughbreds shot 67 percent (14-of-21) from the field in the
first half and held the Lady Lions (14-8) to 16 percent (4-of-25). NewCath
ended up shooting 46 percent (22-of-48) to 21 percent (10-of-48) for Pineville.
The
Thoroughbreds saw three players reach double-figures. Alexus Mayes led the way
with 17 points and Stephanie Lewis scored 13. Junior standout post Nikki
Kiernan followed with another double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds to go
with six blocked shots.
NewCath dished
out 13 assists to three for Pineville. Michaela Ware and Loren Zimmerman
recorded four assists each and Mayes had three.
Pineville
of the 13th Region saw just one player reach double-figures. That was Devin
Enix with 13 points.
NewCath did
not shoot well from the free-throw line. The Thoroughbreds made just 11-of-20
free-throw attempts for 55 percent and the Lady Lions hit 12-of-17 for 71
percent.
The
Thoroughbreds take on 2nd Region champion Webster County (17-2) at
10 a.m. Friday in the All “A” State quarterfinals back at the Frankfort
Convention Center.
