The
defending state champions handed the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds
basketball team its first loss of the year Friday.
The
Louisville Trinity Shamrocks (10-3) came up Interstate 71 and defeated the Thoroughbreds
(12-1), 59-42. Trinity has lost just once to a Kentucky team this year, 53-51
to Lexington Henry Clay at the Eastern Kentucky EXPO Center on Dec. 15.
“They’re just the real deal,” said Grant Brannen, NewCath head coach. “You have to take care of the ball against
them. When you have 20 turnovers, you’re probably not going to win the
ballgame.”
The
Thoroughbreds could not stop Darryl Hicks and Craig Owens. Hicks scored 27 and
Owens added 13 as the Shamrocks led 31-22 at halftime.
Drew
McDonald led NewCath with 12 points. Teammates Jake Schulte and Michael Bueter
followed with eight each.
The
Thoroughbreds play again Thursday against 13-1 Covington Catholic at home. Game
time is 7:30 p.m.
