The Newport
Central Catholic Thoroughbreds girls basketball team (11-4) opened 9th Region
All “A” Region play with a win over an arch-rival.
Host
NewCath downed the Covington Holy Cross Lady Indians, 51-43 behind another
great game from junior standout post Nikki Kiernan. Kiernan finished with
another double-double of 23 points, 11 rebounds to go with seven blocks and
seven steals. Kiernan also made 9-of-12 free throws.
NewCath led
20-19 at halftime before pulling away in the second half. But the Lady Indians made
them earn it by constantly fouling. They committed 28 and had two players foul
out. The Thoroughbreds made just 30-of-49 attempts for 61 percent compared to
1-of-2 for Holy Cross.
No one else
hit double-digits for NewCath. But Loren Zimmerman made 7-of-10 free throws on
her way to nine points and Alexus Mayes added eight.
DeAsia Beal
led Holy Cross with 27 points. Holy Cross fell to 12-3.
NewCath
plays in the tournament semifinals Friday at 6 p.m. against Lloyd Memorial
(5-10). That winner faces either St. Henry or Villa Madonna on Saturday at 7
p.m. for the tournament championship.
