Highlands gets back to .500

The Highlands Bluebirds boys basketball team ventured to Villa Madonna on Thursday and earned its way back to .500. with a 57-45 victory.

Highlands moved to 6-6 overall and 3-1 in 9th Region action and the Blue Lightning fell to 5-7. The Bluebirds have played 10 straight games away from Fort Thomas.

Jake Gronotte led the Bluebirds with a breakout game of 12 points. Teammates Drew Houliston and Luke Turner contributed 11 each.

Defensively, Highlands focused on Villa Madonna’s 6-foot-8-inch center Troy Phelps. Gronotte and company held Phelps to six points. Phelps came into the contest averaging about 13 a game.

Villa Madonna saw two players reach double-digits in senior Thomas Steinkoenig with 13 and Cole VonHandorf with 12. VanHandorf is an eighth-grader.

The Bluebirds travel to Cooper (10-3) on Saturday. The 9th Region contest begins at 2:30 p.m.
