Monday Highlands Results

Highlands Boys Tennis Finishes 10th Region Runner-Up

The Highlands Tennis teams both finished in the top three of the 10th Region runner-up at Easy Walker Park on Monday at Mount Sterling.

The Highlands girls finished third with nine points. Mason County won its second straight region championship with 12 points.

Eventual girls singles champion Tessa Gray of Mason County beat Highlands senior Brooke Hodory, 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals. The Highlands duo of junior Elizabeth Schwalbach and freshman Rachel Hoffman lost to eventual region doubles champion Melody and Sara Dunaway of Harrison County in three sets.

The Highlands boys finished second with eight points. Champion Campbell County won the crown with 12 points. Freshman Peter Laskey lost to Campbell County's Anderson McDowell in the singles semifinals and the doubles team of freshman Matthew Erickson and seventh grader John Laskey lost to Harrison County's Luke Bradford and Lucas Sullivan.

The state tournament takes place at the University of Kentucky next week. It starts May 17 at 8 a.m.

Baseball:
Cincinnati (Ohio) Moeller 8, Highlands 7:

The Bluebirds (16-9 overall) fought back to tie the Crusaders, 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh only to lose in the bottom of the seventh.

Senior Sam Hennigan led the Bluebirds going 2-for-3 with a run batted in and run scored. Sophomore Ethan Kavanagh had a triple for Highlands. Moeller outhit Highlands, 8-5.

Senior Hunter Dreves started for Highlands and pitched into the fifth inning. Junior Kyle Winkler took the loss. The four Bluebird pitchers combined to strike out four and walk nine.

Highlands travels to Dayton on Tuesday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Softball:
Ursuline Academy (Ohio) 7, Highlands 6:

The Bluebirds dropped their second straight to fall to 10-8 on the season.

Highlands outhit Ursuline, 10-8. Senior Liz Mairose and junior Rachel Gabbard both had two runs batted in on two hits and junior Morgan Coffey added two more hits.

Seventh grader Kennedy Baioni took the pitching loss for the Bluebirds. She faced 30 batters allowing six earned runs, a walk and striking out three.

Highlands travels to Newport on Wednesday. Game time is 5:15 p.m.
