For the second straight game, the Highlands Bluebirds softball team started its nine seniors.

Highlands (12-8 overall) may not have played as well. But the Bluebirds recorded another crucial 36th District win, 11-1 over Bellevue in five innings at Winkler Field. Highlands moved to 3-0 in district play.

"They really get behind each other," said Rob Coffey, Highlands Head Coach. "We carried a lot of kids this year because we have so many seniors. They had put so much time into the program. We wanted to give them the opportunity to see that through. That was one of our concerns with carrying so many kids. How do you keep them all happy? But they have all kind of fallen into their roles and embraced it. They all care about each other. They're all there for one mission. We want to get back to the state tournament. They understand it takes a village to get there. It's neat to see."

The Bluebirds outhit the Tigers, 9-2. Senior Josie Daley had four runs batted in on two doubles and sophomore Abby Rust had one hit and two RBI. Eight grader Anna Greenwell, senior Ella Grimm and junior Rachel Gabbard had one RBI on one hit each and senior Maleah Abner drove in one. A number of players got in the game at different points.

"With such a good team, we have so many players that do this and are so dedicated to it," said Piper Macke, Highlands sophomore. "I think it's really rare to find a team that has so many good players that we do. For that, I'm really grateful."

Highlands eight grade pitcher Gracie Schlosser started the game throwing three innings allowing one walk, one hit and striking out five. Seventh grader Kennedy Baioni pitched the other two innings allowing one hit and walking one. Baioni struck out four.

Highlands plays host to Ryle on Friday. Game time is 5 p.m.
