The Bluebirds (17-10 overall) needed to beat the Dayton Greendevils (3-14) to do just that. Highlands took care of the visitors, 24-1 in five innings to do that Tuesday.
"That's one of the first goals we have," said Jeremy Baioni, Highlands Head Coach. "So many of our games really don't mean anything. Those four district games we play are the most important games of the year so it's always nice to go through there and win those games that are necessary to win and take care of business the way we did."
Highlands outhit Dayton, 19-1. Junior Nolan Turner led the way going 3-for-3 with a home run, four runs batted in and four runs scored. Senior Jackson Recht went 3-for-4 with a double, four runs scored and two RBI. Senior Carson Fitters went 3-for-4 with a double, four RBI and three runs scored. Junior Chris Bridewell went 2-for-3 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored. Junior Casey Greene went 2-for-2 with a double and two run scored and senior Evan Lewin went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Senior Ryan Adkins along with juniors Trey Gabbard, Grady Cramer and Tanner Juett had two RBIs each. Greene, Gabbard and Recht had one stolen base each.
Juett threw a complete game for Highlands. He struck out nine, walked none and allowed one hit. Highlands made one error behind him compared to five for the Greendevils.
"Just putting the ball in play really wins you baseball games," Lewin said. "Coach Baioni talks a lot about that. You don't have to hit a home run. You don't have to hit a gapper. You just put the ball in play (and) put pressure on the defense."
Highlands travels to Ryle on Wednesday. Game time is 5 p.m.
