Both
Highlands soccer teams downed visiting Covington Holy Cross on Tuesday.
The
Ladybirds (8-9-1) equaled last year’s win total with a 5-0 shutout. That was
their fifth shutout of the season.
Highlands
Head Coach Brian Wiefering said the Ladybirds came out flat before thunder
forced the game into a 30-minute lightning delay. That was about 10 minutes
into the game.
But they
came out and scored their first goal 20 seconds after play resumed. Lydia
Graves put in a deflection off a defender on a corner kick.
Senior
Taylor Vaughn then took over for the Ladybirds with a hat trick of three goals.
The first goal came off an Ellie Farley cross, the second on a strike from just
within the 18-yard box and the third in a one-on-one situation.
Lauren
Ossege scored the fifth goal for Highlands on and a perfectly-placed penalty
kick. She was clipped from behind earning the shot.
Freshman
goalkeeper Olivia McQueary had three saves in the first half and Shannon Eaton
had three in the second half for Highlands.
Highlands
concludes the regular season on Thursday. The Ladybirds battle Bishop Brossart
at 6 p.m. at Tower Park.
The
Bluebirds (6-8-5) then took the field at Tower Park and won 1-0. Colton Wagoner
scored the goal for Highlands and goalkeeper Nick Breslin recorded two saves.
Highlands
plays host to Ryle on Thursday. Game time is 8 p.m.
