Saturday Sports Briefs

The Highlands Bluebirds soccer team moved back to .500 with a sound 6-2 win over the Dixie Heights Colonels on Saturday at Tower Park.

Highlands moved to 8-8-5 to conclude the regular season. Ben Schweitzer had two goals for the Bluebirds. Logan Groneck, Brady Gesenhues, Drew Rom and Colton Wagoner scored the other Highlands goals.

The Colonels took just three shots on goal. Bluebird goalkeeper Nick Breslin saved one of them.

Highlands plays in the 36th District championship on Tuesday at Tower Park. Game time is 7 p.m.

Volleyball:
Highlands goes 2-1 in Cake Classic:

The Ladybirds surpassed the win totals of the last two seasons going 2-1 in their own Cake Classic on Friday and Saturday.

They beat Beechwood, 2-0 (25-22, 25-22) on Friday. Kaitlin Hall had 14 assists and four kills for Highlands and Jessica Ginter recorded four kills and 10 digs.

Highlands also beat Conner, 2-1 (25-27, 25-16, 25-11) on Friday. Hall and Anna Marie Houliston led the Ladybirds with five kills. Hall added 13 assists and AJ Guth had three aces with Sydner Kroger making 16 digs.

Highlands then lost to Cooper, 2-0 (25-15, 25-17) Saturday. Maria Hockney and Ginter had four kills each and Hall had 11 assists with Izzy Schultz contributing five aces. Hall also had eight digs.

The Ladybirds will try to wrap up the second seed in the 36th District Tournament on Monday against Newport. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
