Saturday Soccer Briefs

The early-season struggles continued for the Highlands Bluebirds soccer team.

The defending 9th Region champion Bluebirds (0-4-1) dropped their fourth in a row falling 2-0 to the Simon Kenton Pioneers at Tower Park. They have scored just one goal in the losing streak.

Senior goalkeeper Nick Breslin had another nice game for the Bluebirds. He saved four Pioneer shots.

Highlands plays host to Bishop Brossart on Tuesday. Game time is 8 p.m.

Soccer, Boys:
NewCath splits Lafayette Cup contests:

The Thoroughbreds (5-1-1) went 1-1 in the Lafayette Cup on Saturday. They beat the host Generals in the morning, 1-0 before falling to the Louisville Ballard Bruins, 3-0 in the championship game.

The Thoroughbreds recorded their fifth shutout of the season against the Generals. They’d allowed just one goal entering the classic.

Junior Andrew Liles had the goal for NewCath in the win against Lafayette and goalkeeper Paul Grosser had six saves. Grosser recorded five saves against the Bruins.

NewCath plays host to Boone County on Tuesday. Game time is 5:45 p.m.

Soccer, Girls:
All “A” 9th Title Game Postponed:

The Lady Breds (3-0) were supposed to meet the Lady Tigers for the All “A” 9th Region title Saturday. It was moved to Wednesday, Sept. 17.
