The Newport
Central Catholic Thoroughbreds softball team finished 2-2 in the All “A” State
Tournament on Saturday and Sunday in Owensboro. The Thoroughbreds are 13-5
overall.
NewCath
lost 12-0 in four innings in the All “A” quarterfinals on Sunday to Louisville
Holy Cross. Holy Cross freshman Kameron Bowling threw a four-inning no-hitter
and Holy Cross took advantage of seven NewCath errors.
Holy Cross
pulled away with an 11-run second inning. Bowling homered in the second and
Bayley Brutscher hit a grand slam in the same frame.
NewCath
opened pool play Saturday with a 20-0 three-inning win over Burgin. The
Thoroughbreds sent 18 batters to the plate in the first inning on their way to
scoring 13 runs on three hits. Kristen Schreiber had an RBI double to left and
Sarah Neace had an RBI single to center. Teammate Taylor Burkart added a
two-RBI single to right in her second at-bat of the first.
Freshman
Haley Meyers recorded seven strikeouts to pick up the NewCath win. She struck
out the side in both the first and third innings.
NewCath
continued with a 10-0 five-inning loss to Livingston Central. Schreiber broke
up the perfect game with a one-out double to center in the fourth for NewCath.
But the
Thoroughbreds rebounded with an 11-1 five-inning win over Whitesville Trinity.
They outhit Trinity, 14-2. Schreiber went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI and
Burkart also went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Molly Mertle and Meyers finished
2-for-3 with an RBI each.
NewCath
takes on St. Henry on Tuesday. Game time is 5 p.m.
Baseball:
Highlands, NC go winless in Louisville Invitational:
Neither Highlands
nor Newport Central Catholic came back from Louisville with a win Saturday.
The
Bluebirds (13-9) lost their lone contest to Central Hardin, 7-2. That snapped a
three-game Highlands winning streak.
Highlands
plays again Monday. The Bluebirds play host to Bishop Brossart at 5 p.m.
NewCath
(7-16) lost all three games. The losing streak hit nine as a result.
The Thoroughbreds
started the invitational with an 11-0 five-inning loss to Bullitt East on
Friday. They then lost 5-4 to Thomas Nelson in eight innings and 14-0 in five
to McCracken County on Saturday.
The
Thoroughbreds travel to Lloyd Memorial on Monday. Game time is 5 p.m.
