Monday Sports Briefs

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team snapped a three-game losing streak Monday.

Highlands (11-8) shut out the visiting St. Henry Crusaders, 2-0 in a rematch of last year’s 9th Region quarterfinal contest. This marked the fourth shutout of the year for the Bluebirds. Two have come against St. Henry.
Ben Vermeil (3-1) picked up the pitching win for Highlands allowing just one hit. He struck out two and walked three in six innings pitched.

Jacob Noe picked up his second save for the Bluebirds. He pitched the seventh and allowed just one hit.

The Bluebirds recorded six hits. Evan Allen went 2-for-3 with a double and run batted in. Jake Whitford also went 2-for-3 scoring one run. Alex Veneman scored the other Highlands run and Kenny Ball had the other RBI.

Highlands recorded four stolen bases to two for St. Henry. Veneman swiped two bases with Whitford and Joey Cochran taking the other two.

Highlands opens 36th District action Wednesday at Newport Central Catholic. Game time is 5 p.m.

Baseball:
Bellevue 4, Newport Central Catholic 2:

The Thoroughbreds (7-11) dropped their fourth in a row Monday.

Bellevue outhit NewCath, 6-2 in the 36th District contest. Jake Yeager had a two-run double scoring Nate Enslen and Zack Pangallo in the fourth inning for the only runs for the Thoroughbreds.

NewCath travels to Cincinnati Anderson at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Softball:
Boone County 10, Highlands 3:

The Lady Rebels spoiled the debut of the new Ladybird home field at Winkler Park.

Boone County pounded out 15 hits. Dallis Knotts led the Lady Rebels going 5-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and three runs batted in.

Shelby Graybill led Highlands going 2-for-2 with two runs batted in on two doubles. Highlands had just four hits.

The Ladybirds return to action Tuesday at East Central (Indiana). Game time is 5 p.m.

Newport Central Catholic 14, Bellevue 0:

The Thoroughbreds (9-3) improved to 2-0 in 36th District action with a five-inning win over the Lady Tigers.

Junior Sarah Neace pitched her third career no-hitter for NewCath and first one this season. She struck out 12. Neace walked one in the second and hit one in the fourth for the only Bellevue base runners of the game.

The Thoroughbreds pounded out nine hits sending 17 batters to the plate in the second inning. They recorded seven hits and seven walks in that inning that saw them score 11 runs. Michaela Ware hit a three-run home run in that inning and Kristen Schreiber hit a two-run blast. Freshman Kennedy Bin added an RBI double.

NewCath added three more in the bottom of the fourth. Meg Martin had a two-run single for the Thoroughbreds in that frame.

NewCath travels to Dixie Heights on Tuesday. Game time is 5 p.m.
