The Newport
Central Catholic Thoroughbreds softball team opened the year with a win
Tuesday.
Host NewCath
downed the Bracken County Polar Bears, 3-1. The Thoroughbreds outhit the
visitors, 5-2.
Freshman Haley
Meyers picked up the win for NewCath. She struck out 12 in the complete game.
Three starters
did not play for NewCath. They were juniors Sarah Neace at pitcher, Loren
Zimmerman at third base and Michaela Ware at shortstop.
NewCath scored
the only two runs needed in the fifth inning.
The
Thoroughbreds scored the only runs they needed in the fourth inning. Junior
catcher Kristen Schreiber doubled and moved to third when left fielder Taylor
Burkart singled. Katherine Schreiber ran for Burkart and stole second and on a
full count, Meyers grounded out to second scoring Kristen Schreiber. Then Molly
Mertle singled to right scoring Katherine Schreiber.
NewCath scored
one more in the fifth. Casey Kohls scored when Kristen Schreiber batted her in.
The Thoroughbreds
open 36th District action Wednesday. They travel to Dayton for a 5
p.m. game.
