Another
year marked another All “A” 9th Region title for the Royal Blue and Gold.
The Newport
Central Catholic Thoroughbreds handled the in-town rival Newport Wildcats,
67-40 for the crown at Dayton on Saturday. It was not as close as last year’s
region title game at Bellevue that NewCath had to hit a good amount of free
throws down the stretch to pull away.
The
defending All “A” state champions have won eight region championships in the
last 11 years and 12 overall since the tournament started in 1990. NewCath
(16-3) also won the state tournament in 2000.
Newport had
no answers for senior Tanner Moeves attacking the basket. The tournament’s Most
Valuable Player scored 24 points.
Thoroughbred
posts Drew McDonald and Jake Schulte also made the all-tournament team. Schulte
had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
NewCath
plays host to Highlands (3-9) on Tuesday in a 36th District contest. The
Thoroughbreds open the All “A” Tournament on Thursday at the Frankfort
Convention Center against Owensboro Catholic at 1 p.m.
