Ladybirds win 9th Region contest; Bluebirds fall to Holy Cross

The Highlands Ladybirds basketball team (13-3 overall) ventured to Union and recorded a 68-62 9th Region victory over the Cooper Lady Jaguars (5-11).

Four starters reached double-digit scoring for the Ladybirds. Brianna Adler led the way with 15 with Zoie Barth and McKenzie Leigh scoring 13 each and Haley Coffey scoring 12. Highlands made 24-of-45 shots from the field for 53 percent and 5-of-14 three-point tries for 36 percent.

The Ladybirds love to drive and create fouls. They had nine to 19 for Cooper. Highlands hit 15-of-25 free-throw tries for 60 percent.

Cooper took 50 shots making 26 for 52 percent and hit 5-of-17 three-point tries for 29 percent. Lexi Held led the Lady Jaguars with 21 points and Hailey Anderson scored 15. Cooper made 5-of-6 free-throw tries for 83 percent.

Highlands travels to Covington Holmes (12-3) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

The Bluebirds (2-7) could not win the debut in the refurbished gym.

Mitch Cain had a tremendous game for Highlands scoring 24 points to go with three rebounds and Kyle Finfrock had 12 points and four rebounds. Bradley Green followed with 12 points and four rebounds.

The Indians (12-4) saw two players record big games. Leighton Schrand led the way with 23 points and six rebounds with Tyler Bezold scoring 15 and nabbing seven boards.

Highlands plays host to Campbell County on Tuesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
