Holmes rallies past Highlands

The Highlands Ladybirds basketball team held an eight-point lead at halftime in a crucial 9th Region road game Monday.

But the Ladybirds (13-4 overall) could only score 15 points in the second half as the Covington Holmes Lady Bulldogs (13-3) rallied for a 58-53 victory. Holmes has won three straight meetings in the series.

The rebounding helped Holmes rally. The Lady Bulldogs won that battle, 27-22 including 16-5 on the offensive glass. Holmes outscored Highlands, 13-3 in second-chance points.

Highlands had two players reach double digits in Brianna Adler with 16 points and Zoie Barth with 10. Adler made all six free-throw attempts. Adler and Barth had three steals each.

Holmes saw three players hit double figures. Jynea Harris led the way with 16 points and Laila Johnson scored 14. Jaynice Stovall followed with 12 and Tyrah Englemon had 11 rebounds.

Holmes made 22-of-57 shots for 39 percent, including 4-of-16 from three-point range for 25 percent. The Lady Bulldogs also hit 10-of-14 free-throw tries for 71 percent.

Highlands made 18-of-38 shots for 47 percent, including 6-of-9 three-point tries for 67 percent. The Ladybirds also made 11-of-12 free-throw tries for 92 percent.

The Ladybirds play host to the Covington Holy Cross Lady Indians on Jan. 19. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
