Bluebirds Earn Another Region Road Win

Highlands Takes Down Dixie Heights

The Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team (14-7 overall) pulled away in the fourth quarter for a crucial 51-42 road 9th Region victory Friday over the host Dixie Heights Colonels (16-8).

Highlands moved to 7-1 in region play. The Bluebirds also avenged a 42-39 loss to Dixie Heights in the region semifinals last year.

The Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team (13-7 overall) would love to see this be the start of another winning streak.

Highlands beat the county rival Bishop Brossart Lady 'Stangs (18-4), 33-25 on Thursday in Alexandria. The Bluebirds saw their eight-game winning streak end 60-57 at Newport Central Catholic on Tuesday.

"A win is a win. It doesn't matter how pretty it is and this is definitely one of our ugly wins," said Jaime Walz-Richey, Highlands Head Coach. "We struggled a little bit offensively. That's uncharacteristic of us. We have to get back to what we do on offense and stick with it."

Region 5 Bowling Results

Gabbard, Cole Qualify for State Tournament

The Highlands Bluebirds bowling teams competed in the Region 5 Tournament on Monday and Wednesday at SuperBowl Bellwood.

Only two individual bowlers on either team qualified for state this year. They were Highlands seniors Gunner Gabbard and Jordan Cole.

Highlands Grabs Three Wins in Three Days

Highlands junior forward Rory O'Hara (35) scored 10 points and had three steals against Covington Holy Cross on Saturday. Highlands moved to 12-6 on the season with its eighth straight win.
The Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team (12-6 overall) won its third game in three days with a 51-37 victory on the 9th Region road Saturday.

Highlands played a make-up game against the Covington Holy Cross Indians and won 51-37. The Bluebirds have won eight in a row and moved to 6-0 in region play.

"It's just the mental aspect - being able to execute plays when you're legs are tired," said Jaime Walz-Richey, Highlands Head Coach. "That's one of the keys. We told them before the game we felt our bench was deeper. Sure enough, we had great play off the bench coming in and giving us points."

The Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team (11-6 overall) dressed just 10 players in the 36th District battle against the host Newport Ladycats (2-22) on Friday for different reasons.

That included the first varsity action for sophomore forward Megan Gessner. But all 10 players contributed in the 52-24 victory. Gessner made a three-pointer, grabbed four rebounds and had an assist. Highlands moved to 2-0 in district play with its sixth straight win.

Highlands Holds off Campbell County

Holding on to a tight lead in the waning seconds, someone needed to make plays for the hosts.

Junior guard Emma Mallery stepped forward to do that with under three seconds left in the game for the Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team (8-6 overall). She made 1-of-2 free throws then intercepted the inbound pass near mid-court to help the Bluebirds preserve a 37-34 victory over the Campbell County Camels (11-6) on Friday.

Bowling Teams Go 1-1

The Highlands Bluebirds boys bowling team lost 5-1 to Pendleton County at LaRu Lanes on Thursday. But both teams defeated Beechwood on Tuesday.

Highlands Girls Hoops Wins

Bluebirds Earn Third Straight Win

The Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team played just its second home game of the season Monday and defeated Indian Hill (Ohio), 57-44.

Highlands (7-6 overall) has won three in a row. The only other home game for the Bluebirds came on Dec. 6 in an 82-53 win over the St. Henry Lady Crusaders.

Highlands Boys Basketball Loses First of Season

The Highlands Bluebirds boys basketball team ventured to Hebron to face the Conner Cougars and were upset 73-61 Thursday losing for the first time this season.

The Bluebirds (14-1 overall) fell to 4-1 in 9th Region action. The Cougars are 8-5 overall and 5-2 in region play.

The Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team is back at .500 on the season at 6-6 with a 71-32 win on the road against the Cooper Lady Jaguars.

The rematch for the Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team (5-6 overall) against the Boyd County Lady Lions (8-6) was not close in favor of the Blue and White.

The Bluebirds led 34-28 at halftime in the Centria Metals/Penn Station Shootout at Franklin County on Saturday. But Highlands pulled away for a 71-53 victory in the second half.
