Highlands Claims Third Straight Over NCC

It took a match-up with the 36th District arch-rival to end the losing streak.

But the Highlands Bluebirds soccer team (5-3 overall) wore down the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds (5-4) in the second half on their way to a 4-2 victory at Morscher Sports Complex in front of a good crowd. The Bluebirds have won three in a row in the series.

For the third time since Wednesday and the fourth time this season, the Highlands Ladybirds soccer team (7-2-1 overall) hit the 10-goal mark. They did it to county rival Bishop Brossart, 10-0 at Tower Park on Monday.

Brian Wiefering made a great point after the Highlands Ladybirds soccer team tied the defending state champion West Jessamine Lady Colts, 1-1 at Tower Park on Saturday.

Highlands tied West Jessamine but lost 1-0 to Sacred Heart on Aug. 26. West Jessamine beat Sacred Heart, 2-1 on Aug. 16. Sacred Heart beat Lexington Catholic, 3-1 to open the season on Aug. 14. But LexCath beat West Jessamine, 3-2 on Aug. 23.

The Highlands Bluebirds soccer team may have finished off a rough week at 0-3. But Highlands (4-3 overall) did find some positives in their 2-1 loss at the Trinity Shamrocks on Saturday.

TAYLOR MILL - Head Coach Katelyn Sallee and staff knew this group could do it.

It just became a matter of proving it. After battling some injuries last week, the Highlands Ladybirds had everyone back Thursday and put together a nice three-day stretch of volleyball going 5-1 to move above .500 on the season at 6-5 overall for the first time this season.

Camels Hand Bluebirds First Loss of Year

Highlands (4-1) outshot Campbell County (3-1), 16-5. Junior goalkeeper Will Burnham had four saves for the Bluebirds.

The Highlands Bluebirds stayed undefeated with another one-goal victory Saturday at Tower Park.

Highlands (4-0 overall) took down the Lexington Lafayette Generals, 3-2 in a non-region battle. Lafayette from the 11th Region fell to 2-4 with the loss.

The Highlands Bluebirds soccer team recorded another shut-out of a 35th District opponent Tuesday blanking the Covington Holmes Bulldogs, 7-0.

The Highlands Ladybirds volleyball team moved to 1-1 on the season with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-13) win over host Campbell County on Thursday.

Highlands Holds Off St. Henry

The Highlands Ladybirds took down the host St. Henry Lady Crusaders, 2-1 in 9th Region action Wednesday in Erlanger to move to 2-0 on the season.

Highlands outshot St. Henry, 23-5. A lightning delay stopped the game with 2:40 left in the first half. Sophomore Maria Wiefering scored both goals. She has all three Ladybird goals on the season as Highlands is figuring out ways to finish early in the season. Gwen Gorman had an assist on the first goal and Greta Noble assisted the second goal.

2017 Highlands Ladybirds Golf Preview

Ladybirds Aim for Top Five Finish in Region

The main goal this year is a top-five finish in the 8th Region Tournament.

With a nice mix of talented upperclassmen and young golfers, second-year Highlands Ladybirds head golf coach Cheryl Spahr said it could happen if her top four scorers can consistently shoot below 100 in the 18-hole tournaments. Highlands graduated three seniors from last year in Sarah Steffen, Savannah Phillips and Alexander Padget.

The Highlands Bluebirds put together another good finish tying for third in the Bourbon County Invitational at Houston Oaks scoring a 331. The 8th Region Tournament will take place there on Sept. 25.

2017 Highlands Cross Country Preview

Depth Factors Huge for Highlands

The Highlands Ladybirds cross country team put together a solid run of a school-record four consecutive Class 2A state championships.

But after coming close once during that time, the Christian Academy of Louisville Lady Centurions ended the streak placing three in the top 10 on their way to 64 points for the state championship. Highlands finished runner-up with 93 points.

Bluebird Golfers take Fourth in Mason County Invitational

In their fourth tournament in as many days, the Highlands Bluebirds golf team placed fourth in the Mason County Invitational out of 14 team shooting a 337. The 18-hole tournament took place at the Maysville Country Club.

The Highlands Bluebirds golf team opened the season in the Pendleton County Invitational on Sunday. The Bluebirds took fifth out of 12 teams with a score of 327.

Ladybirds Looking for More Steps in Right Direction

PHOTO: Allen Ramsey, DWCPhoto.com. The Highlands volleyball team has five seniors this year. They are Joy Kapesser (10), Maddie McCoy (14), Skyler Phillips (13), Gracie Schweitzer (2) and Mary Claire Redden (33).
They've been at .500 at 53-53 overall since Katelyn Sallee became the head coach in 2014.

A huge goal Sallee set at the beginning of her tenure was a winning season. After consecutive 17-18 campaigns, the Highlands Ladybirds volleyball team broke through last year with that feat at 19-17 overall. That marked the program's first winning season since 2010.

Bluebirds Hope to Build off Solid Season

Bert Richey took over as head coach before last season and has begun implementing solid foundations for success for the Highlands Bluebirds golf team.

It paid immediate dividends as Highlands performed well in match play going 10-1-1 on the season. The Bluebirds also finished runner-up in a few tournaments and in the top three in a few more.

Bluebird Baseball Advances in Region Tournament

The first five innings saw a lot of familiar pieces to the recent 9th Region championship runs for the Highlands Bluebirds baseball team (23-12 overall) on Monday.

Highlands used strong pitching from Ethan Doty, some timely hits and took advantage of several Beechwood errors to build a 4-0 advantage in the region quarterfinals at UC Health Stadium. But the Tigers rallied to tie the game in the top of the sixth before Kyle Rust and Trey Bowden had clutch run batted in singles to lift the Bluebirds to a 6-4 victory.

The start made the Blue and White faithful nervous.

Runs have not always come as easy as previous seasons for the Highlands Bluebirds baseball team so it is understandable why a 4-0 deficit in the first inning would make fans nervous. But Highlands (22-12 overall) did not flinch. Instead, the Bluebirds dominated the rest of the way en route to an 11-4 victory over the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds (16-14) in the 36th District championship Friday at Highland Park.

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team (18-11 overall) pulled away from the host Ryle Raiders for a 12-1 9th Region win Monday.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak. The Bluebirds also moved to 11-4 and avenged a 4-3 to the Raiders in Covington on April 13.

The third time turned out to be a huge charm for the Highlands Bluebirds baseball team (16-8 overall) Monday.

In the third meeting against a Greater Catholic League South opponent this year, Highlands edged the Cincinnati Moeller Crusaders (17-6), 3-2 Monday at Highland Park. The Bluebirds had lost to GCL South opponents Cincinnati St. Xavier and Elder earlier in the year.

The two Highlands Bluebirds pitchers in Ethan Doty and Hunter Dreves combined for 14 strikeouts, five walks and just one hit. On the other side, the three Beechwood Tigers pitchers walked 14 Bluebirds, struck out six and allowed four hits.

It may take several of these games if the Highlands Bluebirds baseball team (13-8 overall) is to advance deep into the post-season.

Highlands junior pitcher Drew Rom threw a complete-game, one-hit shut-out of the Campbell County Camels (19-3) on Tuesday at Highland Park in a 1-0 Bluebird victory in a battle of the previous two state runner-up squads. Rom struck out 14 and walked just one.

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team (12-8 overall) took care of business quickly run-ruling the Bishop Brossart Mustangs, 13-3 in five innings in a non-region game.

Weekend Round-Up

The Highlands Ladybirds softball team (6-11-1) played both games at North Laurel on Saturday.

They were shut out in both games by a combined 20-0. Franklin County from the 11th Region handed the Ladybirds a 13-0 defeat in six innings before North Laurel from the 13th Region beat Highlands, 7-0.

Sophomore Rachel Gabbard and the veterans knew they had to relay a huge message to the ones who had not experienced few or any 36th District games where they found themselves huge favorites.

When the game finished, the streak over the rivals reached eight straight.

The key for the Highlands Bluebirds baseball team (11-8 overall, 2-0 36th District) has been not to focus on the winning streak but on beating the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds (12-7, 3-1) that day. The Bluebirds overcame the Thoroughbreds by a 6-2 margin Wednesday in the latest chapter of the rivalry at Highland Park. Highlands moved to 7-2 in 9th Region action with the win.
