The Highlands Ladybirds volleyball team won its own Cake Classic Tournament two years ago.

Highlands (11-7 overall) took a huge step toward another in pool play with two wins Friday. The Ladybirds downed Bishop Brossart, 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-11) and Covington Holy Cross, 3-1 (25-22, 25-9, 23-25, 25-23) and will earn a first or second seed in the single-elimination tournament Saturday.

"We played really good team volleyball against Brossart (with) very few hiccups along the way then came out strong against Holy Cross. The third set was a little shaky," said Katelynn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "We gave them a few opportunities to come back. They played a little tougher and we dropped that set. Then we came back and took care of business in the fourth. I was very happy with the way the girls played."

Highlands originally had eight teams in the tournament. But Warren Central dropped out leaving seven.
