Wednesday Roundup: Highlands softball moves to 11-7

The Highlands Ladybirds softball team handled another 9th Region opponent on the road Wednesday.

Highlands (11-7 overall) took down the Beechwood Lady Tigers, 15-0 in four innings. The Ladybirds moved to 6-2 in region play with the win.

Bailey Spencer came one pitch from a four-inning perfect game. She struck out nine, walked none and allowed just one hit for Highlands.

Junior Shelby Graybill hit a long home run to right field and Brennah Dutcher went 2-for-2 with two doubles. Whitney Quillen went 2-for-3 with a double and Taylor Baioni added a double.

Highlands travels to Dayton on Monday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Softball:
Newport Central Catholic 6, Ryle 5:

The Thoroughbreds (15-5) won their sixth in a row at home. They are 9-1 against 9th Region competition.

Sophomore Haley Meyers again threw a good game for NewCath. She allowed nine hits, walked three and struck out five.

Michaela Ware and Kristen Schreiber recorded two hits each to lead the Thoroughbreds. Casey Kohls, Loren Zimmerman and Meyers all recorded doubles.

NewCath travels to Cooper on Friday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Baseball:
Newport Central Catholic 12, Covington Holmes 6:

The Thoroughbreds moved to 9-13 with the home 9th Region win.

Clint Bartels led the Thoroughbreds at the plate going 4-for-4 with three runs batted in. Ryan Hans went 3-for-4 and Owen Workman went 2-for-3.

Bartels picked up the pitching win to move to 2-4 on the season. He struck out 11.

NewCath plays host to Dixie Heights on Monday. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
