Thursday Roundup: Highlands holds off Scott, 10-8

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team won the opener of the Doc Morris Invitational on Thursday.

Highlands held off the host Scott Eagles, 10-8 to move to 9-3 on the season. The Bluebirds have won four in a row.

Highlands outhit Scott, 11-6. Brady Murray, Conner Kreeger and Todd Ramey had two hits each to lead the Bluebirds. Murray had a triple, two runs batted in and scored twice. Ramey and Kreeger had doubles. Ramey scored twice and Kreeger had two RBI. D.J. Mills added a home run for the visitors.

Highlands ran well on the bases recording seven stolen bases. Jake Whitford, Alex Veneman and Ramey had two and Murray recorded one.

Lou Bunning pitched into the seventh inning to pick up the win for Highlands and Ricky Raisor finished off Scott for the save. Bunning struck out three and Raiser one.

Highlands returns to Scott on Friday for a 6 p.m. contest to continue Doc Morris Invitational play. The Bluebirds face state-ranked Lexington Catholic.

Baseball:
Ryle 5, Newport Central Catholic 0:

The Thoroughbreds (5-9) lost the opening game of the Doc Morris Invitational in Union. Owen Workman took the pitching loss for NewCath.

NewCath plays host to Cooper on Friday. Game time is 6 p.m.

Softball:
Highlands 4, Newport 1:

The Ladybirds (6-5) moved to 2-0 in 36th District play. They have won three in a row.

Highlands travels to Lloyd Memorial on Friday. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
