Thursday Roundup: Bluebirds win eighth in a row

After a struggle to score Wednesday, the Highlands Bluebirds baseball team used an offensive explosion to pull away from another in-county opponent.

Highlands (14-3) exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to beat the visiting Campbell County Camels, 15-7 Thursday. The Bluebirds have won nine in a row including twice over Campbell County.

Lou Bunning pitched six innings to pick up the win for Highlands. He struck out two.

Highlands outhit Campbell County, 16-10. Alex Veneman went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Brady Murray went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Todd Ramey and D.J. Mills also collected two hits and three RBI each. Mills hit a three-run home run and Ramey had two doubles and scored three runs.

The Bluebirds play host to Madison Central on Friday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Baseball:
Newport Central Catholic 7, Bellevue 1:

The Thoroughbreds moved to 7-11 on the season and finished 3-1 in 36th District seed play with the home win.

Owen Workman picked up the pitching win for NewCath. He struck out nine.

Zack Pangallo led the Thoroughbreds at the plate going 2-for-3 with a triple. Grant Moeves also tripled.

NewCath plays in the Louisville Invitational over the weekend.

Softball:
Highlands 23, Cooper 8:

After the tough loss Wednesday, Highlands (9-6) run-ruled the visitors in five innings.

The Ladybirds play in the Bluegrass vs. Buckeye Showcase on Saturday at Dixie Heights. Highlands takes on Mason at 4 p.m.

Newport Central Catholic 11, Lloyd Memorial 0:

Haley Meyers threw her third no-hitter of the season and eighth of her career in the win. She struck out 11 and walked just one.

Meyers also helped her cause at the plate going 2-for-2 with a two-run single, her sixth triple of the year and a sacrifice fly. Senior Morgan Martini also brought in three runs. One came on a double.

NewCath (12-5) plays at Highlands on Monday. Game time is 5 p.m.
