NC Briefs: Baseball run-rules Dayton

It took just five innings to dispatch their 36th District opponent Tuesday.

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds baseball team moved to 5-8 overall and 2-0 in district action with a 15-0 run-ruling of the Dayton Greendevils. NewCath has outscored Newport and Dayton by a combined 41-7 in district seeding play.

Ryan Hans (1-0) picked up the win for NewCath. Five NewCath players had at least two hits.

Grant Moeves led the way going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and Leo Barth also went 2-for-2. Brandon Gray went 2-for-4 with a double and Zack Pangallo went 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBI. Spencer Pangallo also went 2-for-3.

NewCath plays in the Doc Morris Invitational over the weekend. The Thoroughbreds play at Ryle at 6 p.m. Thursday.

St. Henry 2, NewCath 0:

The Thoroughbreds (7-3) could not make it back to the region championship game as St. Henry's Jordan Kramer struck out 11. St. Henry faces Dayton today for the region championship.

The game saw few scoring opportunities. But St. Henry scored the only two runs it needed in the top of the fifth. With two on and the bases loaded, Molly Dietz singled in Carlie Townsend before the Lady Crusaders scored again on an error.

Both teams had four hits. But NewCath had three errors to one for St. Henry.

NewCath plays in the Kentucky Prep 5 Star Classic at North Laurel over the weekend.
