Weekend Highlands Results

Region Pairings Set for Highlands Soccer Teams

The Highlands soccer teams learned their next opponents Sunday.

The Highlands girls soccer team received a great draw with arch-rival Notre Dame and St. Henry getting paired on the other side of the bracket of the 9th Region Tournament. The 36th District champion Bluebirds (14-3-5 overall) face 35th District runner-up Beechwood (8-9-3) on Monday at 7 p.m.

Highlands beat the Lady Tigers, 4-0 on Sept. 10 at Tower Park. The Bluebirds finished 8-1-1 in region play. The winner takes on either 33rd District champion Conner or Dixie Heights on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Henry in the semifinals. The champion is Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Highlands boys (13-5-4) take on Ryle (11-7-3) at Tower Park on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The teams did not play each other in the regular season. The Bluebirds finished 7-0-1 in region play.

The winner battles either St. Henry or Covington Holy Cross on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Dixie Heights in the region semifinals. The championship game is Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Golf, Boys:

Highlands juniors Justin Gabbard and Luke Muller finished their seasons in the state tournament at Bowling Green Country Club on Saturday.

Gabbard shot a 73 on the second day of the tournament for a two-day total of 153 to tie for 22nd in the tournament. Muller shot an 82 on the second day for a two-day total of 161 good for a tie for 55th. The par for the 18-hole course is 72.

Volleyball:
Highlands Takes Runner-up in Cake Classic:

Highlands (24-7 overall) took runner-up honors in its own Cake Classic with a 2-1 loss (25-21, 17-25, 15-4) loss to Dixie Heights in the championship game on Saturday.

The Bluebirds recorded 29 kills on 103 attempts and 12 errors for a .165 hitting percentage, six solo blocks, seven assisted blocks, 25 assists, 52 digs and six aces. Junior Laura Winkler led Highlands with nine kills in the game. Senior Casey Dunn had 10 digs and four kills with senior Audrey Graves recording 25 assists. Sophomore CC Shick had two solo and one assisted block to go with five kills. Sophomore Madison Clore finished with nine digs and two aces.

Highlands defeated Conner, 2-0 (25-16, 25-22) and George Rogers Clark, 2-0 (25-12, 25-14) to finish pool play at 4-0 Saturday. This marked the second win of the season against Conner.

Against Conner, the Bluebirds had 25 kills on 69 attempts with four errors for a .304 hitting percentage, seven aces, three solo blocks, four assisted blocks, 30 digs, 25 assists by Graves and 31 digs. Senior Ava Hockney had a team-high eight kills to go with two solo and two assisted blocks with Dunn and Shick recording two aces each. Dunn also had seven digs.

Against George Rogers Clark, Highlands had 23 kills, 11 aces, two solo blocks, 28 digs and 23 assists. Hockney had eight kills and Shick had six to go with a solo block. Clore and Graves had three aces each. Sophomore Nicole Ossege also had a solo block. Dunn had nine digs. Graves had 17 assists with junior Maria Little tallying four.

The Bluebirds play at Bellevue on Tuesday to finish district play. Game time is 6 p.m.

Cross Country:
NKAC Class Two Results:

The Highlands girls took second in the Class Two Meet at Idlewood Park in Burlington with 94 points. Scott won it with 48. Freshman Alyssa Harris led the Bluebirds finishing eighth in 20 minutes, 27.1 seconds.

The Highlands boys finished third in Division II with 93 points behind Conner (31 points) and Covington Catholic (46). Sophomore Sam Jones led Highlands with a 12th-place finish in 17:13.9 and junior Will Griffith took 13th in 17:17.1.

The region meet takes place on Oct. 26.

Football, Junior Varsity:
Highlands 50, Boone County 0:

The Bluebirds moved to 4-3 with a convincing win and second shutout of the season Saturday at Cecil Memorial Stadium.

Highlands junior quarterback Jake Fahlbusch had two touchdown runs. Sophomore quarterback Isaac Surrey had two touchdown passes.

Highlands plays at Covington Catholic on Saturday. Game time is 10 a.m.
