The Highlands Bluebirds boys soccer team (2-0 overall) knocked off the Louisville Ballard Bruins, 1-0 in a tight non-region game Saturday.

Junior forward Max Farris scored the game's lone goal with about 10 minutes left in the game. He leads Highlands with three goals and two assists for eight points.

"After the win against Beechwood, we knew we had some things to work on," said Chad Niedert, Highlands Head Coach. "We weren't as tested as we'd like to have been in the back. But it's important to keep shutouts with regularity, especially when we're going to be tested in games like this. We'd love to have three, four goals in a game. This game could have been a six-goal game. There were some nice chances created both ways."

Highlands wound up with 26 shots with 13 on goal compared to 14 shots with six on goal for the Bruins (1-1-1). Senior goalkeeper Nick Fischer stopped all six Ballard shots on goal for Highlands.

Niedert said the team is still trying to figure some things out with the back four. Seniors Ford Orem, Elijah Stevie, Adam Groneck and junior Hank Cook saw significant minutes back there.

"We were kind of nervous going into the game because we (graduated 16 players) from last year. They were going to be ready to go at us," Stevie said. "But we did well. The confidence level is going to go up from it."

Highlands travels to St. Henry on Monday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
