The Highlands Bluebirds volleyball team (2-1 overall) recorded a big rivalry win over a state semifinalist from last year.

Highlands ventured to Alexandria and took down the 0-2 Campbell County Lady Camels, 3-0. Highlands has won three straight in the series.

"We started off a little slow, but we were able to piece it together," said Katelyn Sallee, Highlands Head Coach. "We found our rhythm with our speed. We focus our identity on being a fast-offense team. We had to get in rhythm on serve-receive. Once we did that, it was pretty smooth sailing."

Highlands had a .207 hitting percentage recording 39 kills on 111 total attacks with 16 errors. Highlands also had 39 assists, nine aces, 53 digs and five blocks.

Senior Audrey Graves had 35 assists to go with five kills, a combined block and an ace. Senior Casey Dunn had 10 kills, four aces and 15 digs with senior Ava Hockney recording 10 kills, two digs and a combined block. They helped Highlands bounce back from the loss at Kings (Ohio) on Wednesday.

"(Kings) has a really good team and they were constantly keeping the pressure on us, which is why we struggled a lot," Hockney said. "They had some good players and serving was definitely a part of that."

The defensive specialists once again did well passing the ball to Graves. Senior Rylee Kirschenbaum had 10 digs with senior Brooke Biltz digging up seven. The two added two aces each.

Sophomore middle blocker CC Shick had seven kills to go with three solo blocks and a combined block. Sophomore Lauren Buemi had the other block to go with two kills with junior Laura Winkler recording three kills and four digs.

Highlands travels to Scott (1-1) on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.

Soccer:
Highlands 2, Cincinnati (Ohio) Summit Country Day:

The Bluebirds took down a four-time defending Ohio state champion. The Silver Knights have won six state championships since 2012.

"Regardless of size or class, this is clearly a top-tier program," said Chad Niedert, Highlands Head Coach. "This season so far, we've kind of been the hunted and we kind felt going into this game we could be the hunter a little bit. We try to keep it as relaxed as possible and remind the guys we're focused on October and November. This is all just to get tested to see where we're at and get pushed. Summit did do that."

Highlands had seven shots on goal to two for Summit Country Day. Highlands senior goalkeeper Nick Fischer saves both Silver Knight shots.

Highlands has three shutouts on the season. The Bluebirds have outscored opponents, 11-2 on the season.

"We always say we want to win the first 10 minutes," said Ford Orem, Highlands senior. "(When) we scored in the first five minutes, that set the tone. We got them off their toes and they started fighting back. We played our game and tried not to let them get to our heads. It ended up working out."

Highlands junior forward Max Farris scored both goals bringing his total to five on the season. He has a team-high 12 points.

The first goal came about three minutes into the game on an assist from senior Elijah Stevie. That marked the first assist of the season for Stevie.

The second goal came with 10 minutes left in the first half on a penalty kick. About six minutes later, a Silver Knight received a second yellow card for a red card leaving the Bluebirds up a player the rest of the game.

"Our defense was solid as it's been all year," Niedert said. "It rivaled some of the moments we had last year. I told the guys we can enjoy it (Thursday) night and we can enjoy it at school (Friday). But then we have change gears. We don't want to wait until the state tournament to see the best teams. We want to get challenged now."

Highlands travels to Louisville Trinity on Saturday. Game time is 6 p.m.
