Highlands Weekend Round-Up

Bluebirds Softball Moves to 3-0 in 36th District Play

The Highlands Bluebirds softball team (8-5 overall) rebounded from its Monday loss with a five-inning 12-2 win over the Dayton Lady Devils (7-7). Highlands is 3-0 in 36th District play with the win.

Highlands batted .484 (15-for-31) as a team in the win. Freshman Anna Greenwell led the Bluebirds at the plate going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, three runs batted in and three runs scored. Senior Rachel Gabbard went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored. Junior Abby Rust went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored. Junior Taylar Lorenzen went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.

Eighth grader Carly Cramer made her first varsity start for Highlands. Cramer went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Junior Brittney Johnson scored twice for the Bluebirds.

"We did a lot of condition. We have that big hill," Cramer said. "We ran a lot (in practice). One mistake equals a (run up the) hill. That will help us focus on what we're doing instead of thinking, 'Oh, yeah. (Coach Coffey) will let us slip by."

Freshman Gracie Schlosser threw a complete game for Highlands. She struck out eight.

Highlands had three games scheduled in the Cystic Fibrosis Tournament at Madison Central on Saturday. They were rained out.

Highlands Falls at Beechwood:

The Bluebirds (19-8) dropped their second straight 9th Region game, 16-5 in five innings in Fort Mitchell. Highlands had two games at Scott on Saturday cancelled.

Highlands plays at Cooper on Monday. Game time is 5 p.m.
