Thursday Sports Briefs

The Highlands Bluebirds soccer team (11-7 overall) could not earn another big win Thursday losing 2-1 to the Cincinnati Madeira Mustangs at Tower Park.

Nick Gish scored in the first half for the only Bluebird goal. The teams entered halftime tied 1-1. Madeira scored the game-winner at the 10 minute mark.

Highlands had 10 shots and five corner kicks. Goalkeeper Will Burnham had six saves.

"It was a well-fought game," said Greg Bowman, Highlands assistant coach. "We created many opportunities (after Madeira's second goal) but could not score."

The Bluebirds finish the regular season Saturday against Simon Kenton. Game time is 8 p.m.

Volleyball:
Cooper 3, Highlands 1:

The Ladybirds (20-10 overall) could not win their second meeting with the Lady Jaguars this year. They are 10-6 in 9th Region action. Cooper won 25-14, 17-25, 25-17, 25-12.

Junior Margot Seidel led Highlands with 10 kills, 11 digs and one ace. Sophomore Audrey Graves had 32 assists and Casey Dunn recorded eight kills and 15 digs. Ava Hockney followed with nine kills and five blocks. Senior Gracie Schweitzer had 12 digs.

Highlands plays at Bellevue on Tuesday. Game time is 6 p.m.

Football, Freshman:
Highlands 40, Conner 23:

The Bluebirds improved to 4-1 with the road win. Cam Hergott passed for three touchdowns and rushed for another.

Mason South rushed for two touchdowns and Sam Vinson caught two. Tom Kempf had the other receiving touchdown for the Bluebirds.

Highlands faces Cooper at home Monday at 6 p.m.
