Ladybird soccer opens with huge non-region win

The Highlands Ladybirds opened the season with a huge road victory in western Kentucky.

The Ladybirds took down the three-time defending 3rd Region champion Owensboro Catholic Lady Aces, 2-0. OCath lost in the state semifinals last year 3-2 to eventual state runner-up Lexington Catholic and finished state runner-up in 2014 losing 4-1 to South Oldham in the title game.

Freshman Ali Gessner scored the first Highlands goal on an assist from senior Claudia Hils. Hils headed the ball to Gessner inside the 18-foot box ande Gessner finished to the high post.

Sydney Ossege scored the second goal for Highlands. She took the ball just inside midfield on the right side, cut to the middle beating two defenders and finished near post.

Highlands outshot the hosts, 8-4. Junior goalkeeper Olivia McQueary had four saves for the Ladybirds.

"I have never seen a Highlands team play so hard on both offense and defense," said Brian Wiefering, Highlands Head Coach. "We missed two wide-open one-on-ones with the goalie. They did not get a shot on goal inside our 18 that I can remember."

Highlands takes on Cincinnati Ursuline on Monday and St. Henry at Tower Park on Thursday. Game time is 8 p.m. both nights.

Soccer, Boys:
Louisville Trinity 7, Highlands 0:

The Bluebirds (1-1-1 overall) lost to the defending 7th Region champs at home. They take on Boone County on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Highlands Football Sub-Varsity Results:

Both the Highlands junior varsity and freshman teams opened the season Saturday. The Bluebird junior varsity handled Cooper, 44-16 and the freshman team lost 27-18 to Louisville Trinity.

The freshman team takes on Lexington Catholic at 6 p.m. Thursday and the junior varsity squad takes on Campbell County at 10 a.m. Saturday.
