The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbred softball team opened the season with a road run-ruling Wednesday.
NewCath downed Ludlow, 12-2 in five innings. Sophomore pitcher Haley Meyers threw a one-hitter striking out 14 and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, triple and two runs batted in.
The Thoroughbreds travel to Walton-Verona on Thursday. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

The Thoroughbreds did not score in either of their first two games to open the season. They lost to Louisville St. Xavier, 11-0 on Saturday before dropping an 8-0 road decision at Lexington Catholic on Monday.
