Highlands shuts out Ryle, 7-0

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team picked up its first shutout of the season Wednesday.

The Bluebirds (2-0) took care of the host Ryle Raiders, 7-0 in 9th Region action in a game originally scheduled to be played in Fort Thomas but moved to Union. Highlands has outscored its first two opponents, 12-2.

Highlands continued to use its deep pitching staff. Mitch Jones picked up the win throwing three innings and striking out three. Ethan Doty threw the next three frames and struck out six and Conner Kreeger pitched in the seventh. The three allowed just four hits.

On the other side, the Bluebirds had 10 hits. D.J. Mills hit 2-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and a run scored. Brady Murray and Grayson Heck also had two hits for Highlands with Todd Ramey scoring twice and Austin Beal adding a two-run double. Martin had the other double for the Bluebirds.

Jake Ziegelmeyer took the loss for the Raiders. He pitched into the third and allowed nine hits, six earned runs, two walks and struck out three.

Highlands takes on defending region champion Conner on Thursday in Hebron. Game time is 5 p.m.

Softball:
St. Henry 14, Highlands 5:

Highlands (1-1) suffered its first loss on the season. It marked the first 9th Region game of the year.

The Ladybirds partake in the annual Uncle Pete Noll Classic at River City Park starting Friday. They take on Boone County at 5:30 p.m.
