The Newport Central Catholic softball team ventured to Walton-Verona on Thursday and came back with a 6-5 victory to move to 2-0 on the season.
The Thoroughbreds struck first with two runs in the third. Michaela Ware singled, stole second and scored when Kristen Schreiber tripled. Schreiber then scored on a passed ball.
NewCath scored two more in the fourth to go up 4-2. Morgan Martini led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball and third when Haley Meyers singled. Freshman pinch runner Jaden Watts then stole second and Kennedy Bin hit a sactifice fly to score Martini. Watts moved to third on an error on the same play and Lexi Breen laid down a bunt to get her home.
The Thoroughbreds led 4-3 entering the fifth inning when Casey Kohls doubled and scored on a Schreiber single. NewCath added one more in the seventh when Meyers singled.
NewCath outhit Walton-Verona, 9-6 and committed just one error. The Lady Bearcats had two.
The Thoroughbreds play host to Dixie Heights on Monday. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
