NEWPORT –
No one was expected to deny the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbred boys
basketball team its seventh straight district championship.
But NewCath
(28-3 overall) still had to go out and prove it in the 36th District title game
Friday against the host Newport Wildcats (14-16). The Thoroughbreds did not disappoint
in a 56-23 thrashing.
Thoroughbred
senior 6-foot-7-inch post Drew McDonald again had a big game. He recorded his
second double-double of the tournament with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Defensively,
the Thoroughbreds knew they had to contain Newport junior Ethan Snapp. Snapp
made just 2-of-18 shots for six points.
The 9th
Region Tournament starts Wednesday. NewCath is hoping to bring home its first
title since 2000. The biggest challengers look to be Covington Holmes and
Covington Catholic from the 35th District.
