The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbred boys basketball team (24-3 overall) finished its district schedule with a 78-39 thrashing of the host Bellevue Tigers (12-12) on Wednesday. The Thoroughbreds have won six consecutive district tournament championships.

NewCath
earned another top seed in the district tournament to be held at Newport this
year with a 4-0 district record. Bellevue finished 2-2 in district play and
will be the third seed and face the hosts in the tournament semifinals.
Bellevue
could not contain the NewCath posts in Drew McDonald and Ben Weyer. McDonald
scored 19 points and Weyer had 14.
Eleven
different Thoroughbreds scored in the win. Sophomore Trey Wurtz added 10 for
NewCath.
Bellevue
saw two players score in double figures. They were Austin Woodyard and Zach
Barrett with 13 each.
NewCath
takes on Covington Holmes (20-6) at Northern Kentucky University on Friday.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Basketball, Girls:
Covington Holy Cross 58, Newport Central Catholic 51:
NewCath
(15-10) had no answer for Holy Cross senior Ally Mayhaus in the 9th Region
loss. The 6-foot-1-inch post scored 24 points to lead the All “A” State
champions (24-3).
Mayhaus had
help as Deja Turner scored 17. Holy Cross has won 13 in a row.
Ansley
Davenport and Michaela Ware led NewCath with 15 points each. Loren Zimmerman
followed with nine.
NewCath
travels to St. Henry on Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
