Highlands, NC girls post wins

The Highlands Ladybirds handled the Boyle County Lady Rebels to open the LaRosa’s Holiday Classic at Conner on Monday. Highlands stayed undefeated at 8-0 as a result.

Highlands continued its balanced scoring as all five starters scored at least nine points. Brianna Adler led the way scoring 19 points on five three-pointers. McKenzie Leigh followed with 11 and Alex Combs scored 10. Haley Coffey and Lydia Graves had nine each.

Highlands made nine triples. After Adler, the other four starters hit one each.

The Ladybirds play twice in the tournament Tuesday. They take on Owensboro Catholic (5-4) at 10:30 a.m. and Walton-Verona (4-6) at 5:30 p.m.

Basketball, Girls:
Newport Central Catholic 57, Ryle 46:

The Thoroughbreds (7-3) stayed unbeaten in 9th Region play with a home win. NewCath moved to 5-0 in region play.

Ansley Davenport led the way with 16 points and five steals. Lexi Breen followed with 12 and Michaela Ware had 10 points to go with seven assists and six steals. Loren Zimmerman added five steals.

NewCath made 19-of-29 free throws for 66 percent. Ryle hit 12-of-16 for 75 percent.

The Lady Raiders fell to 5-5 with the loss. Juliet McGregor led Ryle with 13 points.

NewCath plays host to Highlands on Saturday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
