But Highlands (8-6 overall) finally recorded that signature victory with a 3-1 victory over the Notre Dame Pandas on Saturday. Highlands won in Park Hills for the first time since 2008 and moved to just 3-11 against the Pandas since that season in which the Ladybirds finished state runner-up.
Notre Dame has won the region four straight years since Highlands' last region crown in 2010. The Pandas own two state championships, a runner-up finish and state semifinal appearance during that time as well.
"Last year, if we beat Notre Dame, it's a huge upset," said Brian Wiefering, Highlands Head Coach. "This year, I've told the girls after many of our games including many of our losses. I've told the girls they're such a better team. They're doing everything they need to do to win the games. We're just missing easy shots. Once these easy shots start falling, you'll see how great you are. They got to witness that."
Highlands freshmen Lindsey Meyer and Haley Dougherty led the way offensively. Meyer had two goals and an assist and Dougherty scored the other goal.
Highlands led 2-0 at halftime. Dougherty scored first before Sydney Ossege assisted one to Meyer.
Notre Dame scored to start the second half. But Meyer scored on a breakaway later in the game. Her second goal hit the upper right.
"We definitely outpossessed them in the first half. It looked like Notre Dame was getting tired the way we were passing the ball around," Wiefering said. "Notre Dame came out in the second half like warriors. They were on a mission. When they put one in, I wasn't surprised. This team did something special and countered Notre Dame's pressure to get a goal and put the game out of reach. I was proud of them."
Highlands takes on Dixie Heights on Monday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Soccer, Boys:
Highlands 1, Dixie Heights 0:
Highlands (7-7-2) won its second straight and fourth in the last five games with a road win Saturday. Ethan Mills scored the game's lone goal and Ben Seiter had the assist.
Highlands takes on Campbell County on Tuesday. Game time is 8 p.m.
Volleyball:
Highlands goes 4-1 in Cake Classic:
The Ladybirds went 4-1 in the Cake Classic to move to 12-11 on the season. Highlands beat Dixie Heights, 2-0 (25-13, 25-22) before losing to Bowling Green, 2-1 (25-19, 19-25, 15-2) on Friday.
Highlands came back and won all three matches Saturday by 2-0 scores. The Ladybirds beat Bishop Brossart, 25-20, 25-13, Walton-Verona 25-18, 25-15 and Conner 25-17, 26-24.
Highlands takes on Scott on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Taylor Mill.
Football, Junior Varsity:

The Bluebirds (4-2) dropped their second straight this week after opening the season with four wins.
Highlands does not play again until Oct. 10. The Bluebirds take on Dixie Heights at 10 a.m.
