Tuesday Round-up: Highlands volleyball, soccer teams win

Highlands handled the Newport Ladycats, 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-14) in the 36th District opener Tuesday. The Ladybirds moved to 3-3 on the season.

Lauren Epperson led Highlands with eight kills with Maria Hockney and Hannah Harris recording seven and six each. Setter Emma Little had 18 assists with AJ Guth recording eight digs. Izzy Schultz and Little had six aces a piece.

Highlands plays host to Bishop Brossart on Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Soccer, Boys:
Highlands 2, Boone County 0:

The Bluebirds (1-4-1) earned their first win of the season and avenged a 1-0 loss in the 9th Region quarterfinals last year.

Ben Schweitzer and Ethan Mills scored the Highlands goals and Paul Tully made five saves in goalkeeper. The Bluebirds took 18 shots including 10 on goal.

Highlands travels to Taylor Mill to face the defending state runner-up Scott Eagles on Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Soccer, Girls:
Highlands 4, Ryle 1:

The Ladybirds (3-2) broke a two-game losing streak with the win. Ryle tied defending state champion South Oldham, 0-0 Saturday.

Ellie Farley scored in the first half for Highlands. That marked the only goal of the half for either team.

Lauren Ossege gave Highlands a 2-0 advantage in the first two minutes of the second half. Haley Daugherty and Annie Schneider added goals to put the Ladybirds up 4-0 before Highlands went into defensive mode the final 25 minutes and Ryle scored on a penalty kick. Ossege and Lindsey Meyer had assists.

"The speed of outside back Karolyn Lukjan on the attack with the ball at her feet really began to open up the game for the Ladybirds," said Brian Wiefering, Highlands Head Coach. "She is proving to be a top outside defender in Northern Kentucky."

Highlands takes on Cincinnati Seton on Thursday at Tower Park. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
