NewCath hoops teams improve to 2-0

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbred basketball teams improved to 2-0 with wins Saturday.

The NewCath girls won their 36th District contest over Dayton (0-3, 0-2), 76-42 on The Hill.

The Thoroughbreds had three players reach double figures. They were Michaela Ware, Sarah Neace and Taylor Tolle with 18, 14 and 11 points respectively. Ware made seven field goals and Neace had four three-pointers.

Dayton also saw two players reach double-digits. They were junior forward Lindsey Trimnell with 15 and sophomore forward Ashley Bressler with 14.

The teams committed a combined 42 fouls. NewCath hit 17-of-31 for 55 percent and Dayton made 12-of-20 for 60 percent.

NewCath plays host to Dixie Heights (2-0) on Wednesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Later in the day, the Thoroughbreds ventured to Union and took down the Cooper Jaguars (1-1), 64-53.

NewCath again saw three players reach double digits in scoring. They were Drew McDonald with 22 and Ben Weyer with 14. Grant Moeves also scored 14 in the victory.

The Thoroughbreds play host to Boone County (1-1) on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
