NewCath girls move to 3-0

Newport Central Catholic’s girls basketball team won its third game of the season in as many times Wednesday.

The Thoroughbreds pulled away from the host Dixie Heights Lady Colonels (3-1), 51-36 for another 9th Region win. NewCath led 32-20 at halftime and pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Lexi Breen scored 14 points to lead NewCath. Michaela Ware, Loren Zimmerman and Sarah Neace followed with nine points each. Neace made three three-pointers.

The difference in the game was turnovers. NewCath’s patented on-ball pressure defense that forced 25 turnovers.

“That was big,” said George Stoll, NewCath Head Coach. “Our press was working pretty well. We played hard and got after it. It was a good win.”

Dixie Heights saw Liza Tibbs score 18 points.

NewCath made 9-of-18 free throws for 50 percent. Dixie Heights hit 4-of-7 for 57 percent.

The Thoroughbreds travel to Breathitt County on Saturday. Game time is 4 p.m.
