The Highlands Ladybirds girls soccer team (4-8) finished seventh in the Lexington Catholic Cup with a win Saturday.

Highlands defeated Elizabethtown, 3-0. That snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Ladybirds did it without seniors Taylor Vaughn and Allyson Bridewell. Vaughn was on a college visit and Highlands Head Coach Brian Wiefering confirmed Bridewell is no longer with the team.

Highlands scored all three goals in the first half. Hannah Culyer scored the first goal from about 10 yards out after a defender deflection.

Lydia Graves gave Highlands a 2-0 lead. She moved up high on the attack from about 25 yards out and hit the upper 90 far post.

Claudia Hils capped off the scoring with a header on a corner kick. Kiersten Clukey had the corner kick and found a spot on the all-tournament team.

Olivia McQueary played the first half as goalkeeper and had five saves. Sophomore Shannon Eaton recorded five saves in the second half.

The Ladybirds take on Ryle on Monday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

NewCath travels to Conner on Monday. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Bluebirds (3-6-4) recorded their fifth straight shutout at Tower Park.

Senior goalkeeper Nick Breslin and sophomore Simon Frink split time between the pipes for Highlands. Neither had to make any saves.

Vadim Lightner scored twice for Highlands. Colton Wagoner and Ben Seiter had the other two goals. Lightner, Wagoner and Evan Ling had assists.

Highlands does not play again until Tuesday against Cincinnati Anderson at Tower Park. Game time is 8 p.m.

NewCath takes second in Tribe Shootout:

The Thoroughbreds (8-6-3) finished second in the tournament at Madison Central splitting their games.

They opened the morning with a 4-2 loss to Lexington Tates Creek. But they came back and recorded a 1-0 win over the hosts.

NewCath plays host to Villa Madonna on Tuesday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
