NC football, volleyball teams fall

No team has been able to slow down the Simon Kenton Pioneers so far.

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds football team was the latest one in a 46-13 loss at Newport Stadium on Friday. Undefeated Simon Kenton (4-0) outgained NewCath, 484-78 in total offense. The Pioneers ran for 257 yards and passed for another 227.

On the other side, NewCath (0-3) continues to struggle running the ball. The Thoroughbreds ran for a minus-33 yards against the Pioneers. They collectively have 76 carries for no yards on the season.

Sophomore quarterback Patrick Henschen completed 15-of-27 passes for 111 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Brandon Gray led the way with seven receptions for 41 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Cameron Racke completed 16-of-20 passes for 213 yards to lead Simon Kenton. Logan Winkler had six catches for 84 yards and two scores and Logan Scott had three for 65 yards.

Price Burge had 11 carries for 91 yards to lead Simon Kenton. Racke had 10 carries for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Teammates Kyle Heflin ran for 69 yards on seven carries and Dillion Powell had seven rushes for 56 yards.

Simon Kenton scored one touchdown in the first quarter. Racke hit Winkler for a 46-yard touchdown pass and Winkler ran in the two-point conversion to put the Pioneers up 8-0.

The Pioneers exploded for 22 points in the second quarter. Powell and Racke had 1-yard touchdown runs before Hefflin ran it in from five yards out. Hrusto Selimovic hit all five extra-point tries in the win.

NewCath got on the board with 36.8 seconds left. Henschen hit Clint Bartels for a 30-yard touchdown strike and Ryan Hans made the extra-point try.

The Pioneers put the game away in the third quarter. Racke hit Winkler for a 12-yard touchdown and Racke broke free for a 21-yard touchdown run with 7:22 left in the third. Simon Kenton led 43-7 at that point.

NewCath scored its second touchdown with 3:53 left. Henschen hit Nate Enslen for a 10-yard scoring strike.

Simon Kenton added a field goal with 5:16 left in the game. Selimovic made a 20-yard field goal to make the final score.

NewCath plays host to Dixie Heights (2-1) on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.

Volleyball:
NewCath drops two:

The Thoroughbreds (4-7) lost two games Friday in the Louisville Volleyball Invitational Tournament at the Ohio Valley Volleyball Club.

NewCath lost 2-0 (25-13, 25-15) to Louisville Sacred Heart. The Thoroughbreds then lost to Walton (Georgia), 2-0 (25-12, 25-11).

NewCath concludes the tournament today. The Thoroughbreds are guaranteed three games.
