Saturday Sports Briefs

The Highlands Bluebirds boys soccer team recorded its fourth tie of the season against North Oldham on Saturday at Tower Park.

The Bluebirds (1-6-4) just recorded their first win against Newport Central Catholic on Thursday. They’ve scored just six goals this season and have allowed 20. This marks the second scoreless tie of the year.

Highlands plays host to Covington Catholic on Tuesday. Game time is 8 p.m.

Volleyball:
NewCath goes 2-1 on second day of LVIT:

The Thoroughbreds (6-8) went 2-1 on the second day of the Louisville Volleyball Invitational Tournament. They took runner-up honors in the Bronze finals.

One win came against Louisville Male, 2-0 (25-17, 25-16). Rachel McDonald led the way with 11 kills. Teammate Keyaira Lankheit had six kills with Mikah Freppon and Amanda Ruwe recording 22 assists and 13 digs respectively.

The second win came against Louisville Holy Cross, 2-1 (25-16, 16-25, 25-16). McDonald had 13 kills and Lankheit had 10. Freppon had 24 assists and Ruwe 19 digs.

NewCath then lost to Louisville Eastern, 2-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-13) in the Bronze title game.

McDonald and Lankheit had 14 and nine kills respectively. Freppon had 25 assists and Ruwe 15 digs.

NewCath takes on Lloyd Memorial in Erlanger on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
