Highlands senior Rachel Gabbard led the Bluebirds going 3-for-4 with two home runs, two runs batted in and two runs scored. Juniors Abby Rust and Taylar Lorenzen had two hits each. Lorenzen had a double.
Highlands freshman pitcher Gracie Schlosser pitched into the fourth inning striking out two before eighth grader Kennedy Baioni finished the game. The two combined to allow three walks, one home run and five earned runs. Dixie Heights scored two unearned runs off two Highlands errors.
Senior Maggie Fields and freshman Ava Meyer had three hits each for Dixie Heights. Fields doubled, triple, drove in three, scored twice and senior Kaylee McGinn homered.
Senior Brianna Smith threw a complete game for the Lady Colonels. She struck out two, walked one and allowed three earned runs.
Highlands travels to Tates Creek for two games Saturday in the Spring Fling. The Bluebirds take on Bedford (Indiana) North Lawrence at 3 p.m. and Rockcastle County (6-1) at 6 p.m.
Baseball:
West Clermont (Ohio) 13, Highlands 8:
The Bluebirds (4-2) lost in Batavia against the Eastern Cincinnati Conference member. Highlands fell behind 8-2 after two innings.
Highlands still outhit West Clermont, 15-12 and both teams committed two errors. Senior Trent Johnson led the Bluebirds going 3-for-4 with a run scored and senior Bryce Ziegler went 3-for-4 with a home run, run scored and a run batted in. Senior Cooper Schwalbach went 2-for-4 with a home run, double, two RBIs and a run scored. Junior Mason Schwalbach went 2-for-4 with a double, run batted in and run scored.
Highlands had six extra-base hits. Senior Kyle Winkler and junior Ethan Kavanagh also doubled.
Highlands does not play again until Monday. Covington Holy Cross comes to Fort Thomas for a 5 p.m. contest.
