The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team moved to 2-0 with a 2-1 win over the Ohio County Eagles (1-3) in the Hot Rods Classic in Bowling Green on Friday.
Ohio County finished 20-8 last year. The Eagles lost 1-0 to the Muhlenberg County Mustangs in the 3rd Region championship game last year.
Highlands senior Cooper Schwalbach singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to win the game. Junior Brennan Haigis threw four innings to pick up the pitching win for the Bluebirds striking out two. Junior Ethan Kavanagh singled home the other run for Highlands.
"It was a huge lesson," Cooper Schwalbach said. "Early in the season, it's not that big of a deal, but it definitely sets us up for the post-season. You have to have a lot of confidence (in those situations)."
Both teams recorded six hits. Kavanagh went 2-for-5 to lead the Bluebirds and Ty Lambert went 2-for-4 to lead Ohio County.
The Bluebirds play two more games in the Hot Rods Classic on Saturday. Highlands takes on Greenwood at 10 a.m. and Grayson County at 12:30 p.m.
