The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team held on for an 8-7 win over the Conner Cougars (1-2) in the season-opener Wednesday at Highland Park.

"It's always good to get a win. It's obviously early. We played like it's early," said Jeremy Baioni, Highlands Head Coach. "We need to clean some things up especially defensively and need to make sure we have each others' back. I thought we had pretty good approaches offensively."

Highlands senior Nolan Turner pitched the final three innings to pick up the win. The Bluebirds ended the game with a double play.

"It was a very exciting moment," Turner said. "I was thinking, 'Wow.' I could depend on my team to get me out of (the inning). It was a really great feeling. I think we're going to be very good this year."

Highlands batted .407 (11-for-27) in the win while holding Conner to .214 (6-for-28). Senior Trent Johnson led the Bluebirds going 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two runs batted in. Senior Chris Bridwell went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored with junior lead-off hitter Ethan Kavanagh going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Senior Cooper Schwalbach had a three-run double in the first inning down the line in left field and senior Bryce Ziegler also scored two runs.

Highlands led 5-1 after two innings. But Conner scored five in the top of the third to go up 6-5. The Bluebirds took the lead scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth.

Highlands made four compared to none for Conner. The Cougars scored three unearned runs while all eight Bluebird runs were earned.

"It was a few routine plays," Baioni said. "It's high school baseball. If you don't make a routine play, then walk a batter and get a passed ball or wild pitch, suddenly a hit turns into two or three runs instead of just a runner on. That's why it's so important to make those routine plays. In high school, you rarely have an inning where a team scores runs by banging out three, four, five hits in a row. It's going to take time. This was our first game on real grass. We practice on it, but you can't simulate real game situations."

Highlands travels to Bowling Green for three games Friday and Saturday. The Bluebirds play the Ohio County Eagles (1-1) at 8 p.m. at Bowling Green Ballpark.
